TODAY’S MINDBENDER
Almost one in five married people dislike this about their spouse.
I’ll have your answer coming up.
Do you have a genius talent?
I heard a terrific interview with Francis Ford Coppola, who brought us, among other great films, The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. He was asked if he thought of himself more as a writer or more as a director, and he said:
“I believe we’re a genius species, and we all get talents. It’s not always the talent we want, however.”
For the record, he loses a few credibility points because he said during the same interview that he always wished he was a better writer. This from the guy who’s won THREE Academy Awards for his screenplays.
But he’s right.
I know it’s sometimes hard to identify where our best talents lie. There are so many things we want to do with our life, so many things we wish we were better at.
The universe can be cruel. Sometimes the thing we crave isn’t the thing we’re good at. Take Samuel Morse. He spent years trying to become a great painter. The world wasn’t buying.
Instead, he found his place in science and helped develop the telegraph, along with the code that still bears his name.
Sure, self-help books often encourage you to “follow your passion” and you’ll succeed. I don’t believe that. I subscribe to the belief that you should find what you’re damned good at and bring your passion with you.
As Coppola said, we all “get” talents. You have some, even though they may not align perfectly with your desires. It’s merely a matter of having a long, tough talk with yourself, identifying your talents, and loading your passion onto a trailer that comes along with you.
The universe can’t always make your hopes and dreams come true. It can only offer you particular talents.
And it’s an offer you can’t refuse.
