After yesterday’s announcement, I’ve done my best to respond to as many messages, emails, and social media comments as possible.
If I did not respond to yours, please don’t hate me. It got a little overwhelming in the last 24 hours.
Bottom line: Thank you for all the incredibly kind words and wishes.
As I mentioned to a few people who expressed extreme sadness—life goes on.
THANK YOU so much. I love you guys.
Note: The MB Club mailer will return on October 7th. However, if you’re a paid subscriber, you will continue to get the bonus Saturday mailers until then.
Let's get on with the countdown.
Along with today's Mindbender you get these bonus stories:
Drink-shamed
Work frustrations
The pool table pickup
But first, today's Mindbender:
One in six people say they’ve been told they’re doing this wrong.
I'll have a clue coming up.
Drink-shamed
I have one of the most boring orders ever when I go to a coffee shop. I ask for a medium-sized black tea. That’s it.
But perhaps your order is an iced venti caramel macchiato with three pumps of extra vanilla, one shot, light on the ice, add whip and extra caramel drizzle.
Does it embarrass you to place your complicated order or do you say it loud and proud?
According to a survey, more than half of coffee drinkers have been afraid to say their customized order out loud because they don’t want to be “drink-shamed.”
Ah, thank goodness for the app, right? No one has to hear a thing.
And here I am feeling a little sheepish about simply asking for a couple packets of stevia.
Work frustrations
Tomorrow is Human Resource Professionals Day. So a shout-out to all my HR peeps.
They have to put up with a lot of nonsense in their day-to-day life, including complaints. And what are those complaints?
According to a survey, some of the top workplace grievances are:
- Dissatisfaction with salary—29% are frustrated about that
- Lack of appreciation—26%
- Lack of support from managers—16%
- Poor values or culture—10%
HR folks say the most common issues that get brought to their attention are: Poor communication, failure to follow rules, toxic negativity, and gossip.
In my experience, people seem to actually love gossip—until it’s about them.
Here's a clue for the Mindbender:
It’s a household chore, but not generally a kitchen or bathroom chore.
The pool table pickup
The next time you feel like hoppin’ in your pickem-up-truck and rolling down to the billiards hall to shoot some pool, imagine this instead:
Staying home and shootin’ pool in the back of that truck.
Behold! The pool table pickup truck is now a thing. And it can be yours for the low, low price of only $9,000.
It’s a 1990 Ford F-150 regular cab, being sold by someone in Tennessee. Once again, we look to our friends in Tennessee for true innovation.
Not only does this baby have a sweet pool table instead of the truck’s bed, but it also comes with jacks so you can make sure the table remains level. And decals on the truck say “The Hustler.”
See the story and the photo here.
And now, the answer to today's Mindbender:
What are they doing wrong?
Dusting.
Sheesh, everyone’s an expert.
You’d think if you’re at least doing it, the other person would shush and just let you get ‘er done.
That'll do it for today's Mindbender. Thank you for being part of The Club.
REMEMBER: The MB Club will be on hiatus until I start my new show over on Kool 105. That’ll be October 7th.
Paid subscribers will still receive their bonus Saturday mailings.
Enjoy your day!
Dom
Only in their dreams can men be truly free. 'Twas always thus, and always thus will be.
Hi Dom. I've never written or called in before, but today seemed like the appropriate day to write and express my gratitude for the past 30+ years. I stumbled across your show in October 1993 when I was a freshman at the Colorado School of Mines. I listened to the Mindbender almost every day, but I really became a loyal listener when I worked at the Kodak plant in Windsor during the summer of 1995. They played 100.3 over the intercom 24 hours a day. I never want to hear "We've Got Tonight" by Bob Seger every again. Over the years, whenever someone would mention the Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men duet that was #1 on the charts for a record number of weeks in 1995, you'd say, "I'm not familar with that song," and I'd yell at my radio, "Because you were playing We've Got Tonight every three hours for the entire year! Dom and Jo-mama my ass!"
The closest I came to participating was in November 2001. You had a feud with a rival morning show (Greg and Bo on 105.9) and you invited Amy Freeze on the air for an hour during your charity marathon. Amy had a daily segment on 105.9 and was blissfully unaware of the feud. You and Jane said, "We're on the air with our friend Amy Freeze" with smirks on your faces at least 20 times that hour. I waited patiently for her to say something that I could take out of context and when she did, I wrote to Greg and Bo. The next morning, when Greg and Bo read my email, Amy protested, "That's completely out of context. You're in deep do-do, Richard!" They set up a webpage to take a poll whether to fire her or not. Fortunately, I have a degree in Math and Computer Science, so I was able to bypass their one vote per computer limit and voted around 14,000 times out of 16,400 total votes. Without my votes, she would have been fired by a 59-41% margin. After that traumatic experience, I became a passive listener. I also decided to start a monthly donation to the Food Bank of the Rockies. For some reason, my name would always come up on your list and you'd thank "Richard from Golden for his monthly donation" on the air almost every year.
I've listened from 6:00 in the morning when I got into my car until you signed off the air every day. I even delayed all meetings until 9:30, so I wouldn't miss Rattle Off. I retired in July 2021, but I still got up to listen to my boyzzzzz. I loved listening over streaming so I could hear profanity. I still laugh about the woman who only got four answers to Rattle Off, paused and then said, "Motherf$#&#er." Unfortunately, after you moved into the new building, the dump button worked for streaming, too.
There are so many things I'd like to thank you for, but two things in particular. The first was when you talked about the roadtrip you took after your dad passed away. Ever since, whenever I need some time alone to process something, I go for a car ride. The second was when you mentioned that someone told you that your foot pain was caused by tying your shoelaces too tight a couple of years ago. I had the same problem and loosened my shoelaces and my foot pain has vanished. I can walk around for hours now without pain. It was just a few seconds on your show, but it changed my life!
I look forward to hearing you on KOOL in a few weeks. As a tribute to you today, when I went through the Chick- Fil-A drive thru, a young man handed me my bag and said, "You have a good one." I replied with a straight face, "Thanks for noticing."
Hi Dom, I've been a listener for about 25 years, and am just glad this is only a change and not a goodbye! I have already programmed your new station on my radio! I will be listening on 10/7. Best wishes with the new gig!!
